Septic Tank Inspection and Pumping FAQ

The city schedules septic tank inspections and pumping for select residential properties as part of the city's rotating maintenance program. When properties are selected (typically in the summer months) the homeowner should receive a letter of notification. Please note Ordinance #2022-02 outlines the septic policy in detail. Most important for the homeowner to understand is the following - D. Property Owner Responsibility (1) The owner of the property served by a building sewer shall be responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, blockage, surface replacement, and any damage resulting from operation, maintenance, repair and blockage of said building sewer, from the point of connection with the building drain to the public sewer. There has been a misunderstanding regarding sewers located on private property. Every dwelling/business in the city limits has their own septic tank(s), it belongs to the property, not the city. The private tank ties into the city sewer system, but the private tank is not OWNED by the city. We've had a few real estate sales in town and this has become an issue. The septic tank on the property is part of the ORGINAL PROPERTY BEING SOLD. Therefore when you sell your home, you need to list on the disclosure statement that your septic tank is part of your property - the city does not maintain it, the city only INSPECTS IT AND PUMPS IT. For copies of the ordinance, please contact the city clerk.
